  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1½ tablespoons rice wine
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1½ onions, peeled and cut into ¼-inch dice
  • 1 cup whole-grain barley or pearl barley, rinsed and drained
  • 3 carrots, peeled and cut into ¼-inch dice
  • 3 stalks celery, ends trimmed and cut into ¼-inch dice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
