  • 30 whole black peppercorns
  • ½ teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 1-inch (2½-cm) cinnamon stick, broken in half
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 4 green cardamom pods
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1½ teaspoons table salt
  • 1½ tablespoons ghee (see Notes)
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
